  • Protea cynaroides is a woody shrub with thick stems and large dark green, glossy leaves.
  • The "flowers" of Protea cynaroides are actually flower heads with a collection of flowers in the centre, surrounded by large colourful bracts.
  • The flowerheads vary in size, from about 120 mm to 300 mm in diameter. Large, vigorous plants produce six to ten flower heads in one season.

Availability

One of the oldest groups of flowering plants, protea have existed for over 300 million years. Smaller florist sized packs of 40 to 50 stems are increasingly popular.
Widely grown in Californian as well as Australia / New Zealand Protea are available virtually year round because of their opposite seasons.

Care and Handling

Most varieties of Protea dry extremely well.

Grades

A family of interesting and unusual long lasting flowers available in a vast array of shapes, colours and sizes. Florist quality Protea should be a minimum of 40 to 50 cm with some varieties reaching 90 cm tall.
Protea are graded by stem length and bloom size.

Preparation

Leaves should be removed from bottom 20 cm of stems.
